The Mediterranean Diet

Mediterranean_Map_2012The Mediterranean diet derives its name from the countries which border the Mediterranean Sea. There are many variations of the Mediterranean diet due to social, political and economic differences between Mediterranean countries.

However, the Mediterranean diet does share some common characteristics:

  • The large consumption of olive oil which dominates all Mediterranean meals.
  • High consumption of fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, such as pasta, beans, nuts, etc.
  • Moderate consumption of fish and poultry.
  • Moderate consumption of wine, (a glass of wine for lunch).
  • Low consumption of eggs and red meat.

According to a research from the influential and distinguished American Mayo Clinic we can say that; “the Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating plan combining elements of Mediterranean-style cooking”.
