Caggiula tried to hurdle a fallen Team USA player early in the second period, but was upended and landed on his shoulder/neck area. Caggiula remained motionless on the ice for about 10 minutes as medical personnel stabilized him and put him on a stretcher.

He was taken via ambulance to the hospital, where he was released a couple of hours later after undergoing tests. All of them came back negative.

Caggiula’s father, Sal, told the Herald that he watched the final period of the game from the hospital in discomfort, but seems to be OK.

“It was really tough, I was kind of tearing up for him,” teammate Rocco Grimaldi said. “I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. It was tough for all of us to see. My thoughts and prayers are going out to him. I’m hoping he’s OK and hoping he can get back.”

UND coach Dave Hakstol said: “It’s hard to see with any member of the team. We’re happy there’s some good news.”wholesale jerseys from china

The building remained silent as Caggiula was taken off on the stretcher. Teammate Andrew Panzarella, who was scratched Saturday night, rode with Caggiula in the ambulance to the hospital.

UND players say it wasn’t easy to continue playing.

“I thought I had good energy in the first period, then that happened,” Grimaldi said. “It was like hockey doesn’t matter. There were things more important than that game. That’s all I was thinking about. But we had to play the rest of the game for him and I thought we did a good job.”

UND did go right back to work and scored three times in the second period, while outshooting The Under 18 team 17 2. Mitch MacMillan, Brendan O’Donnell and Jordan Schmaltz all had tallies for UND, while Coltyn Sanderson finished it with an empty net goal.

Notre Dame recruit Sonny Milano scored the lone goal for Team USA, a squad comprised of the top 1996 born players in the country. One of Team USA’s players, forward Shane Gersich, is headed to UND next season. He finished with one shot on goal and no points. Under 18 team, which beat the Fargo Force 4 1 in a United States Hockey League contest Friday night, moved to 1 3 against NCAA Division I teams this season. Its win came against Lake Superior State.

The contest was a tuneup for UND, which returns to National Collegiate Hockey Conference play next weekend against St. Cloud State.

“Real good second period,” Hakstol said. “A lot of positives there. Up and down, I thought, in the first and third periods. Once we got to the third period, it was a matter of running out the 20 minutes from our standpoint. Give them credit. They played a game last night and tonight, they played their best hockey in the third period, which was their sixth period of the weekend.”

UND was able to get its first look at senior Derek Rodwell and Sanderson in game action this season. Neither had suited up yet, but both were solid against the American squad.

O’Donnell also continued to show his great growth from last season. He had two points in the exhibition. They won’t count in the official statistics, where O’Donnell already has surpassed his goal total from last season.
